Eating Disorders
For many people struggling with an eating disorder it functions as a coping strategy, a protective mechanism allowing them to feel in control when life becomes overwhelming. While eating disorders may seem like an effective way to deal with life’s struggles, they’re extremely harmful.
Types of eating disorders include:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Purging Disorder
- Orthorexia
- Exercise Addiction
- Atypical Anorexia
- Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)
While an eating disorder is a mental illness, there are serious physical outcomes associated with bingeing, purging, restrictive and selective eating. Eating disorders have medical complications that affect every organ system and can even be fatal. For children and teens, they can affect growth and development.
Early detection and treatment has the best prognosis. However, regardless of how long someone has had an eating disorder, most people do recover if they receive the right treatment.
The treatment provided by our highly skilled and experienced dietitians is informed by psychological modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Our use of trauma-informed care prioritises safety, collaboration, trustworthiness, choice, and client empowerment.
