In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our Intensive Outpatient Program has been adapted to run in a virtual format. Based off the vision our of original IOP, the virtual IOP is designed as a group based treatment for eating disorders with the use of video sessions for meals, meal support, and supportive groups. Founded on the principle of eating as the central component to eating disorder recovery, the program focuses on normalizing eating and food by providing multiple opportunities for eating under the supervision of compassionate, caring, skilled practitioners
The stress and uncertainty that living in a pandemic brings can serve to heighten eating disorder symptoms and feelings of isolation. The virtual IOP program is designed to provide an increased level of support that is not otherwise offered in a community setting in Ontario. Using a group format helps to decrease loneliness and build a sense of community amongst participants.
With one hour groups running Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and Meal Support for a provided lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, the virtual IOP program easily fits in to the weekly schedule of participants, without the need for extra time to travel to and from groups during the week.
All groups and meal support occur online, by video, from wherever you are. Some small in person groups are available upon request
To create a more structured meal environment, each week three lunches are provided to each participant (available for pick up Monday afternoons from Connected Eating) and are eaten in a group format with meal support
Additional meals for the week are available to those who would benefit through our Plan to Plate program.
The IOP is run by a experienced team of dietitians, psychologists, and other professionals who run virtual groups and provide support to program participants. They communicate weekly with existing treatment teams to maintain a continuous circle of care
After a free electronic assessment, new participants are added to the program each week, without the need for a waiting list. Groups are kept at an eight person maximum to provide a small group community format to treatment.
